Drywall installation is the board stage of the wall system. The framing, utilities and backing behind the drywall should already be complete and suitable before sheets are hung.
Installation Scope
Projects may include new drywall on prepared non-structural wall or ceiling framing, replacement sheets after completed repairs, or closing a prepared opening after plumbing, electrical or HVAC work has been finished.
Structural framing changes are separate.
Before the Sheets Go Up
The area should be checked for:
- complete framing or approved backing;
- resolved leaks and moisture;
- completed utility work;
- required insulation or fire/sound assemblies already designed appropriately;
- absence of unresolved mold or contamination;
- compatible board type for the location.
Wet-area or fire-rated assemblies can have specific requirements beyond ordinary drywall.
Board Selection
Standard drywall, moisture-resistant products, fire-rated assemblies and specialty panels are not interchangeable.
The correct panel type depends on the room, assembly design and applicable requirements.
The correct panel and assembly must be confirmed from the project requirements and manufacturer documentation; product appearance alone does not establish a fire rating, moisture rating or code-compliant assembly.
Installation Process
Sheets are measured, cut and fastened to the prepared framing according to the applicable product and assembly requirements.
Joints are planned to avoid unnecessary narrow strips and awkward seams where practical.
Boxes, openings and penetrations are cut only after their locations are established.

Board installation leaves visible joints and fasteners.
