Drywall finishing begins after the sheets are already installed correctly. The work is about turning board joints, fasteners and corners into a continuous surface ready for texture or paint.
It is not the same as drywall installation or repairing a damaged wall.
Surfaces and Project Types
Finishing may involve:

- replacement sections after a larger repair;

- surfaces being prepared for smooth or textured finish.
Boards that are loose, incorrectly installed or badly damaged should be corrected before finish work begins.
Joint Treatment
Tape and joint compound are built in layers rather than one heavy coat.
Each coat should feather farther from the joint as the surface is leveled. Corners and fasteners require their own treatment.
Drying time depends on material, coat thickness, temperature and humidity.
Sanding and Dust
Sanding is part of finishing, but excessive sanding can expose tape or damage drywall paper.
Dust control and protection matter in occupied homes. Older adjacent paint or texture may also require lead or asbestos-related precautions before sanding.
Smooth vs Textured Finish
A smooth finish reveals more surface variation and can require additional work.
Texture can help visually blend the wall, but it does not eliminate poor joint work underneath. The desired texture should be agreed before the final coats are completed.
Ready for Paint
Drywall finishing leaves the surface prepared for primer and paint.
Primer and painting are separate finish stages unless explicitly included.
