Backsplash layout should account for:
- countertop lines;
- cabinet bottoms;
- outlet and switch locations;
- inside and outside corners;
- windows;
- range or hood areas;
- exposed end edges;
- tile pattern and focal points.
Small changes in starting position can determine whether the finished installation ends with awkward narrow cuts.
Material and Setting Method
Ceramic, porcelain, glass, stone, mosaics and non-tile panels can require different cutting tools, adhesives or mortars, grout and edge details.
The selected system should follow manufacturer requirements for the material and wall.
A kitchen backsplash is not the same as a shower waterproofing assembly.
Installation Process
The layout is dry-planned first. Material is then cut and set with attention to joint spacing and transitions.
Grout or finish sealant is completed after the setting material is ready. Outlet cover plates and adjacent trim should sit cleanly against the finished surface.

That depends on the existing bond, thickness, wall condition and product system; removal may be the better option.
Does backsplash installation include plumbing or electrical changes?
No. Utility changes should be handled by the appropriate qualified trades.
